History of Morning Sun's 4th of July Celebration Display

The year was 2007. At a coffee meeting a group of ladies met and discussed ideas how they could add
activities to the famous 4th of July celebration in Morning Sun, Iowa. The quilt show idea was planned
for the morning of the 4 th at the United Methodist Church. We are celebrating 16 years of this quilt
show, and proud to keep this activity growing.
The group included Mary Ellen Griffith, Nancy McElhinney, Flossie Hamilton, Marge Wheeler, Lillian
Sellers, and Bev Karagin. Many of these women were quilt collectors and some designed quilts for
themselves, family and friends. Soon more people became involved and the sanctuary of the church
was filled with quilts, creating a beautiful show place.
The knowledge about the patterns of the vintage and designer quilts is amazing. Delores Noble, Kathy
Moore, Patricia Hamann and Joyce Schrader are just a few of the people who can provide expert
knowledge to people attending the quilt show every year.
The quilt show has grown over the years and the families of the ladies that first organized this quilt show
in 2009, have joined many other people in helping make this event a place to come on the 4 th of July in
Morning Sun. Bring your quilts for set up from 1-4 on Monday. Everyone is welcome.
This year there will be quilts from Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania; plus a great
selection from right here in Morning Sun and surrounding areas. The quilts will include vintage,
designer, sports memories, and other surprises. This presentation is an outstanding collection that the
committee is proud to present. The quilt show will open at 10 am on the 4th of July and close at 2. Please
pick up quilts after the parade. If you have questions please call/text Sue Nichols 319-750-4944.
